Carla Brooks was always a giving and generous woman. In fact, her son says her life has always “been about other people.” After her late husband, Karl, suffered a stroke, the loyal woman became his caregiver. Day in and day out she would feed, clothe, and bath the man she loved. The couple were together for 20 years before the man sadly passed away. Carla was lost and beyond heartbroken.
The couple’s son, Barton, saw how deeply the loss of his father affected his mother.
“She was stuck as a caregiver who had lost her meaning, because her meaning was my dad,” Barton said.
Barton wanted to ease his mother’s grief and pain. As a way to honor his parents’ love for each other and the two decades they spend with each other, he decided to take his mother on an adventure…to Europe. Baron wanted to cover twenty countries, one for each year his mother spent caring for his father.
Carla was at a loss for words when she was presented with the gift.
“Bart! “Oh my gosh!” She said with happy tears in her eyes.
Carla actually inspired the idea herself. Years ago, before she had married Karl, she was engaged to another man. When she discovered her fiancee had been unfaithful, the young woman packed her bags with the money set aside for the wedding and backpacked through Europe on her own.
“She uses adventure, often, to heal herself from things that are difficult,” states Barton.
The family plans to spend about three months abroad, visiting cities such as Barcelona, Paris, and Rome.
Carla and Karl had a “forever love” that couldn’t be destroyed, even by death. Luckily, her husband’s memory lives on through their son and the wonderful trip they have created in Karl’s memory.
